The Jawun Research Institute was launched in 2017 as North Queensland’s first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research centre, dedicated to advancing Indigenous prosperity, social and economic inclusion, and cultural continuity.
The Institute builds on foundational research programs including the Empowerment Research Program, CREW, and the Building Indigenous Research Capacity Project, in collaboration with community partners. It focuses on engaged, high impact, applied research to support equitable health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In this position, you will contribute to projects such as ‘GeneEqual’ and ‘ALIGN’, supporting research into the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics, while actively engaging with Indigenous communities to uphold principles of sovereignty and self-determination.

Position Requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively with respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and an interest in research that supports First Nations health, wellbeing and social outcomes.
- Ability and willingness to support research projects under guidance, including contributing to day-to-day research activities as part of a broader team.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, listen respectfully, and work effectively with a range of stakeholders in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including confidence using Microsoft Word for document preparation and Microsoft Excel for basic data management and use of formulas.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and engage constructively with diverse stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, in support of evidence‑informed decisions.
- No prior research experience is required; however, candidates who are currently studying, have studied a relevant discipline, or can demonstrate a genuine interest in the goals and values of the Institute are encouraged to apply.
