The Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC) was established in 2019 to undertake research that works with nature to build an economically and environmentally sustainable
future to enrich our coastal communities. From the base of CQUniversity’s Gladstone Marina campus, in the industrial port city of Gladstone, CMERC neighbours the Great Barrier Reef World
Heritage Area (GBRWHA). CMERC staff have strong links with local industry, port and community groups and are working closely with Traditional Owners.

 

CMERC has undergone significant growth in its boating and diving operations, and we are looking for a reliable and experienced team member to support our research activities on the water.

 

The role involves operating CMERC research vessels, including RV Mudskipper, a 5.9m centre console, and RV Grit, an 8m Shark Cat, along with responsibilities such as boat cleaning and maintenance. As the coxswain, your tasks will include launching and retrieving boats, conducting pre-departure checks, providing crew inductions, maintaining logs and incident reports, and other duties outlined in CQUniversity's Roles/Responsibilities for boating operations (available on request).

Position Requirements

 

Mandatory:

 

  • Extensive knowledge of coastal waterways in the Gladstone region. Mandatory:
  • Current Queensland Manual Open Driver’s Licence. Ability to drive manual vehicle and manoeuvre trailers, to launch boats.
  • Working knowledge of acts, regulations and standards relating to Domestic Commercial Vessels
  • Demonstrated understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • AMSA Certificate of Competency Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal (or above) (or equivalent) with three years’ experience operating commercial vessels
  • Short range operator certificate of proficiency (SROCP) (or equivalent) or higher
  • General Purpose Hand Certificate (previously Elements of Shipboard Safety)


Desirable:

 

  • 4WD certification Desirable:
  • Current Certificate in Provide First Aid HLTAID011 (or equivalent)
  • Current Certificate in CPR HLTAID009 and Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy HLTAID015.
  • Previous experience in research support.
